How To Store Leather Long Term

Blog

If you need to store your leather in a storage unit, you might be worried about it holding up. It would be extremely inconvenient for you if your leather was ruined because you stored it incorrectly. Here are some steps that you can take in order to make sure that your leather is in just as good of condition as you left it when you originally put it into storage.

1. Have the Leather Cleaned Ahead of Time

Your first step is to make sure that you remove any foreign particles from the leather that you are storing by having it cleaned professionally. This is important because it will allow you to remove any chemicals or anything else that might cause your leather to degrade. You won't be able to check on your leather as easily if it is in a storage unit, so you are therefore going to need to make sure that you get your leather as clean as possible before storing it.

2. Stuff the Sleeves or Boots With Acid Free Paper

After all of your leather goods have been cleaned entirely, you will need to stuff any enclosed spaces, such as the sleeves of jackets or the inside of your boots, with acid free paper. The paper will absorb any moisture that might form on your leather goods and keep them from growing mold or degrading. You want to make sure that the paper is acid free so that, when it absorbs the moisture, it doesn't transfer any chemicals to the leather. You can purchase acid free paper online.

3. Don't Fold Anything

If you fold something that is leather and keep it folded for an extended period of time, you risk causing permanent or semi-permanent crease lines in the leather itself. This is going to make the item that you have folded look much less attractive. You need to be sure that you put your clothing on a sturdy enough hanger in order to make sure that you can hang up all of your leather garments and feel relatively sure that they are going to stay on the hangers and not fall down. You don't want to come to retrieve your stored leather and find that it has fallen to the floor and now has crease lines on it. If you make sure that you hang up your leather garments on hangers that are made of wood, you can leave your garments without any worry.
