Tips For Using Mini Storage Buildings

Blog

If you live in a large city, there's a good chance that you are going to have a small apartment that won't be able to fit all of your personal possessions. This can be especially frustrating to those who are sentimental and want to keep everything, from all of the birthday cards that they have received over the years to the artwork that their children made for them six or seven years ago. In order to accommodate all personal possessions, you are going to need to look for offsite storage, such as mini storage buildings, where you can place your things and access them easily. Here are some tips for making the most of the mini storage buildings and keeping your possessions safe.

1. Keep Your Stuff Off the Ground

Unless all of your personal possessions are stored in plastic, airtight containers that will never leak, you are going to need to make sure that you keep all of your personal possessions off the ground. This is because you want to ensure that, should the snow melt or if there is a heavy rain, you don't experience flooding that could ruin your furniture and other stored items.

The cheapest way to keep your possessions off the ground is to go to a business and see if they would be willing to give you any pallets. Many businesses retire pallets on a regular basis simply because they have slight scratches. You should be able to get your pallets for free. Once you have them, line the floor of your mini storage building with pallets and then place your items on top of them.

2. Keep Sand in Your Storage Unit

In order to make sure that you are able to get items in and out of your mini storage building easily, you are going to want to keep a small bucket of sand near the door. This will allow you to carefully walk over to the building, open the door, grab the sand, and then use it to melt any ice or snow that might be in the way of your building. This will reduce the slickness near the door and allow you to carry heavy items in and out without worrying about slipping.

3. Use Plywood to Stack

Finally, when you are loading up a mini storage building, consider using planks of plywood in between each layer of boxes in order to make sure that you are able to fit as many boxes as possible without wrecking the stability of the pile of boxes that you are creating. You can purchase plywood at your local home improvement store.
